Hondo Crouch was the Texas storyteller who bought Luckenbach in 1971 for thirty thousand dollars and turned it into a porch-picking, beer-drinking haven. A former swim coach and rancher, he dubbed himself “mayor” and filled the place with tall tales and playful festivals. His easygoing humor shaped Luckenbach’s whole identity, and even after his passing in 1976, the laid-back spirit he created still defines that little Texas crossroads.
