Turtles on the move! With the warm, wet weather around, our local snake-necked turtles are on the move — and that means they’re at greater risk. This one, spotted by Jenny Kikkeros, was making its way towards what used to be a swamp — but development, homes, fences and even drains can pose problems that turtles can’t surmount. While they’re agile, they can’t climb vertically. Sadly, that means more chance of road strikes, and more vulnerability to cats and dogs. A few things you can do to help:

Why is it exciting to find a Northwestern Pond Turtle in the wild? 🐢 As a native to the Russian River, these turtles are an indicator species telling us how healthy their watery ecosystems are. Due to loss of habitat, poor water quality, and the introduction of competing non-native turtles and predators like the American Bullfrog, the more Northwestern Pond Turtles we find in our waterways the healthier those ecosystems are for all of us. | Sonoma Land Trust
