Masks act as a physical barrier against the virus that causes COVID-19, helping prevent the virus from sneaking into the body and binding to ACE2 receptors on lung and airway cells. Now, UCSF researchers have published work on a new way to neutralize the virus once it’s already in the body: by blocking the interaction between the virus and ACE2. The team engineered antibody-like molecules -- still in early development -- that "straitjacket" the virus and prevent it from binding with cells. They’

FIRST LOOK: You’re watching the twists and turns of a vital type of cell membrane protein called an integrin (pronounced “INT-uh-grin”) that sits embedded in the surface of all animal cells. Cells use integrins to connect, communicate, and respond to their environments. When searching for a connection, an active integrin bends and sways at a flexible midpoint “like a sunflower seeking the sun.” It’s a dance never before seen in high resolution. Integrins are crucial for many important biological

UCSF Health's new offering of focused ultrasound can help close a key gap in treatment options for essential tremor, the world's most common neurological disorder. Essential tremor makes the activities of daily life challenging for an estimated 10 million Americans. About 30-50% of patients may not respond to medication. Focused ultrasound is a unique alternative treatment option in that it offers immediate tremor improvement that is stably maintained for several years, with no incisions, implan

Making the medical school application process more inclusive is no small task. John A. Watson, PhD, one of our 2020 UCSF Medalists and a member of the UCSF community for more than 40 years, has championed a holistic approach to admissions that has expanded the diversity of UCSF’s student body. “He said that there are more things you have to look at to decide who would succeed and who would not succeed beyond just grades or scores on aptitude tests,” UCSF School of Medicine dean Talmadge E. An exciting discovery from UCSF and Cedars-Sinai researchers could be the first step toward growing human organs from scratch, a long-time goal of regenerative medicine! They identified cells that can be programmed to prompt other stem cells to form rudimentary, organ-like structures — including one that contracts like a beating heart. "These engineered 'organizer' cells could someday enable us to repair and replace organs in the patients (who) need it," UCSF's Wendell Lim says. Learn more ➡️ ht
